WordPress vs. Wix
There are many possibilities to create your own homepage even without programming knowledge. Here you have to distinguish between two systems:
- Homepage construction kits (Wix, Jimdo)
- and content management systems (WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Typo3)
WordPress is a software for creating a website. It can be installed at any hosting provider. Wix is hosting provider with already integrated software in one.
Homepage construction kits
There are so-called homepage construction kits, which already contain a complete hosting. That means, you don’t have to take care of anything technical like server or webhosting. Jimdo and Wix are the best known and most popular homepage construction kits. The costs are about 5 – 17 € per month. There is also a free version available, but it is financed by advertising. With Wix and Jimdo, you can create your own online presence without any previous knowledge. Choose from over 500 designs and fill your website with content. The comprehensive editor offers you a wide range of options, but it’s still user-friendly and easy to use.
A homepage construction kit is recommended if you want to create a homepage quickly and easily. Wix and Jimdo make every effort to be in no way inferior to traditional CMS systems, while at the same time making it easy and straightforward to use. The disadvantages of such construction kits often lie in the details. With Wix, for example, you don’t have access to the source code. If you stick strictly to the design template and the available tools, you will have few problems. But if you have special wishes it will be more difficult to implement them easily. Another big disadvantage could be the loading time. In order to be found in the search engine, it is important to deal with the topic search engine optimization. For Google it becomes more and more important to keep the loading time of a website as low as possible. Homepage construction kits are said to have considerable disadvantages with regard to the loading time. Use for your web page also absolutely an own domain instead of the xxx.jimdo.com.
What does Wix cost?
Wix is now available in different packages. From personal use to business and eCommerce. The cheapest tariff starts with 4,50 € per month, but includes advertising. The combo package costs 8,50 € with 2 GB bandwidth. This means that every user who visits your website uses some of your bandwidth, depending on the size of the website (images, text, etc.). If you don’t want to be limited here, you can get the „Unlimited“ package for 12.50 € per month. Or VIP for 24.50 € including priority support. Business packages (e.g. for store systems) are available for up to 35 €. Your domain, i.e. the Internet address, is added with about 10 € – 30 € per year, whereby the first year at WIX is free.
Content Management Systeme (CMS)
A content management system is a software that allows you to bring your content to a website. You can do this with the modern systems also without programming knowledge. The difference to Wix and Jimdo is that you first have to find a hosting provider where you can install your desired CMS. But don’t worry! Nowadays, this happens almost automatically with just a few clicks.
WordPress has become the most popular content management system. It is easy to use and a huge developer community provides various tools (plugins). This is also one of the many advantages of WordPress. The source code is completely open and every programmer can develop any plugins or designs and also adapt them.
With WordPress you can also choose from thousands of designs, these are called themes. There are free themes or even commercial ones. Since every programmer can add his own themes, the choice is much bigger than with Wix and Jimdo. Not only the design can be customized but also the functions of the website can be extended by so-called „plugins“. On the WordPress website there are currently about 60,000 plugins available. From the newsletter distribution list to a store. There are no limits.
How you will get to your WordPress page in just a few steps:
- Find a good hosting provider (e.g. World4you) with PHP and database support
- Install WordPress
- Install a theme you like
- Install all plugins you need (contact form, newsletter subscription, etc.)
- Create the website content
- Go online!
With WordPress you can create not only a beautiful, but also a super fast website. This is especially important for the Google ranking! Because of the open source software every developer can view the source code and create extensions (plugins) and designs (themes). Or, alternatively, any available plugin and design can be adapted and changed by the programmer.
What does WordPress cost?
WordPress itself is free, there are also countless free themes and plugins. For special wishes there are also Pro Themes, which cost about 30 € – 60 €. The provider fees are about 5 – 10 € per month depending on the hoster (World4you „DOMAINSERVER 2020“ e.g. 6,90 €). Your domain, i.e. the internet address, will cost about 10 € – 30 € per year, whereas the first year is usually free.
These costs are only for the hosting if you create the website all by yourself. If you have a professional WordPress website developed for you, the creation is of course much more expensive.
